Hanson Bay, a small, secluded bay sits along the south coast of Kangaroo Island just west of the famous Kelly Hill Conservation Park. It is accessible via West River Road, which runs south off of South Coast Road.
West River Road is an unsealed road, but like many places the harder it is to get to the more beautiful it is.
The bay is dominated by the Hanson Bay Wildlife Sanctuary that offers its guests the opportunity to stay right onsite in one of its self-contained beachfront cabins.
Staying right on the property gives visitors the chance to enjoy the pristine beach, as it is great for swimming, snorkelling, canoeing and fishing.
The wildlife sanctuary itself is known for its bushwalking, with 90-minute guided tours the best way to explore the 100 hectare property. On this guided walk visitors will have the opportunity to see koalas, kangaroos, tamer wallabies, echidnas, possums and bats living in their natural habitat.
The Hanson Bay Wildlife Sanctuary is also home to Kangaroo Island’s famous ‘Koala Walk’.
This leisurely walk is the best place on the island to see these animals in the wild in large groups. Up to 20 koalas may be together at one time relaxing in the shade of the Eucalyptus trees.
