Kangaroo Island’s weather never really gets too hot or too cold. In fact, the average temperature here is between 11 and 19°C. Winters (June to September) are mild and wet, while summers (December to February) are warm and dry.
August tends to be the coolest month of the year and February is the hottest, while from May to September is when Kangaroo Island experiences its rainy season.
Due to its mild temperatures and comfortable weather and climate, Kangaroo Island can be visited throughout the entire year, though summer is the most popular time to visit. Getting to Kangaroo Island is easiest in summer, when the weather is best. This is when the majority of the animals start to give birth to tiny creatures that are protected by the heat and the sun.
From March to May is autumn, a time of greenery and transition. The rain gradually starts to fall providing the wildlife with fresh water and grass to feed on. It is the perfect time of year to go hiking and bird watching and to see the Little Penguins begin nesting.
Winter (June to August) is magnificent on Kangaroo Island, what with the lush greenery, flowing rivers and plethora of wildlife. This is when the mammals come out and when joeys start to emerge from their mother’s pouches. It is also a fantastic time for whale watching. Those that do not like the rain will not enjoy winters here, as July’s weather is the island’s wettest month.
September to November is springtime on Kangaroo Island and it is the best time to see birds and wild flowers. There are around 40 endemic flower species that are in full bloom in the spring and the Eucalyptus trees are truly magnificent at this time of the year.
