Camp grounds and caravan parks on Kangaroo Island.

Kangaroo Island has a good range of caravan parks and camping sites. Visitors wishing to transport campervans aboard the SeaLink ferry from mainland South Australia to the island must make advance reservations and specify the exact length of their vehicles.

Advance reservations should also be made at caravan parks during peak times.

 

Brownlow’s Kingscote Tourist Park and Family Units overlooks a safe Nepean Bay children’s beach where dolphins swim alongside black swans. Accommodations range from basic fishermen’s cabins to a one-bedroom honeymoon suite. Two bedroom units suitable for families are also available in this natural bushland setting.

Another seaside caravan park, Kangaroo Island Shores, faces the Hog Bay beach near Penneshaw just 200m from the ferry terminal. All dozen seafront rooms boast private oceanfront balconies, while tropical plants surround the garden villas. Rooms are also available at the original Sorrento Guest House building.

Guests can stay at standard park cabins, luxury cabins, or self-contained log cabins during their stay at the Western KI Caravan Park and Wildlife Reserve.

Flinders Chase National Park is just a short drive away from this wildlife reserve where bush walkers may come in close contact with wallabies, koalas, or even kangaroos. Unpowered tent sites and fully powered campsites are also available here.

Browns Beach contains a rustic campground with only unpowered sites, but the recently refurbished American River and Vivonne Bay campgrounds include both powered and unpowered sites.

Bush camping is strictly prohibited on Kangaroo Island and wood fires are not permitted at conservation sites or national parks.

Penneshaw’s Gateway Visitor Information Centre has all the latest updates on campground booking, fire restrictions, and other important information for Kangaroo Island campers.

Kangaroo Island Seafront Holiday Park

Kangaroo Island Seafront Holiday Park (formerly KI Shores Holiday Park) is a great place just to relax and unwind while being perfectly situated 300 metres to the SeaLink ferry and close to town and shops.

The Seafront Holiday Park now offer luxe glamping as a camping alternative. Eco-friendly luxury tents are situated in a secluded corner of the park, surrounded by native bushland and offering wonderful views of Hog Bay.

They’ve been transformed into a “Glamping Experience,” each with a unique design.

Kingscote Tourist Park and Family Units

Located in a magnificent bushland environment, the Kingscote Tourist Park and Family Units is situated at the picturesque and serene Nepean Bay.

Accommodation is available in the basic Fishermen’s Cabins, and also three-star self-contained suites with en-suite bathrooms.

In addition to cottages, there is also a variety of powered and unpowered campsites, most with shade. Here, you may see native Pelicans, Black Swans, and Dolphins in their natural habitat.

The town of Brownlow is a great starting point from which to explore the nature of Kangaroo Island. Most of Kangaroo Island’s major attractions are within a convenient 45-minute drive of this campsite. Kingscote Tourist Park and Family Units does not have a pool. This property welcomes pets for free. Quiet and peaceful, close to beach and Kingscote.

Discovery Lagoon Caravan & Camping Grounds

Discovery Lagoon Caravan & Camping Grounds are just a short walk from Emu Bay, a 5 acre campsite that is part of 100 acres of forest where animals like koalas and kangaroos are allowed to roam about.

Kangaroo Island’s Discovery Lagoon is tucked away in a grove of gum trees and bottlebrush bushes. Migratory birds congregate in the lagoon in search of a good nesting ground in winter when the lagoon comes to life. The Lagoon has been home to more than 100 species of native birds.

There are no tamed or confined animals here; the kangaroos and other wildlife are free to come and go as they want, watched over by breeding galahs from the river red gums above.

An excellent campground, Discovery Lagoon on Kangaroo Island has a beautiful setting, plenty of shade, and top-notch basic facilities. It’s an excellent place for families to stay when touring Kangaroo Island because of the small playground it has for the kids.

Consider one of the Unique couples retreats – a one room eco-glamping cottage. Note that there is no en-suit in these little cottages as the amenity block is close by.

Western KI Caravan Park

The only 4 star self-contained accommodation on Kangaroo Island’s western end, Western KI Caravan Park is surrounded by 17 hectares of natural woodland.

Cabins with 1-2 bedrooms and powered and unpowered wilderness caravan sites provide self-contained lodging. Satellite TV, comfy seating, a fully equipped kitchen, a toilet, and a private terrace are all included in the cabins’ amenities.

Western KI Caravan Park

There are shaded powered sites, many of which are nestled in the bush, as well as unpowered sites. Modern amenities, including a playground and a camp kitchen, are available.

There is a common kitchen and a covered BBQ area for guests to use if they choose to cook their own meals. Linen is provided, and there is also a self-service laundry room in the building. Gas tank refills are also available.

The pristine bushland and grasslands of Flinders Chase National Park, home to the world-famous Kangaroo Island attractions including Cape du Couedic, Admirals Arch, and the precariously balanced Remarkable Rocks, are right next door. The Flinders Chase National Park is about a 10-minute drive away.

Remarkable Rocks and the Cape du Couedic Lighthouse may be reached in 40 minutes by car. Hanson Bay Beach, where you may go swimming and fishing, is 4.3 miles away.

Visitors to Western KI Caravan Park & Wildlife Reserve may go for a walk in the woods around the campground. If you’re lucky, you’ll spot k koalas, wallabies, possums, kangaroos, echidnas, goannas, cockatoos and cape barren geese on the park’s wilderness paths.

Ice and fishing bait are among the basic necessities available at a seasonal on-site store. Wines from Kangaroo Island are also available for purchase.

Kangaroo Island Council-run Campgorunds

The Kangaroo Island Council maintains a total of seven camping areas dotting the island’s landscape. Each campground has their own distinct characteristics.

A first come, first served policy governs the availability of these sites, which cannot be booked in advance. Each campgrounds has its own fees, which are paid on-site.

Current Council Campgorund Fees

  • Powered site $35 a night for up to two people
  • Unpowered site $22.50 a night for up to two people
  • Additional persons $7.50 a night

American River Campground

American River is a small township about 30 minutes from Penneshaw. The campground is on the foreshore and is a council run campground.

The campground is located next to the American River boat ramp entrance. American River, a little community located approximately 30 minutes north of Penneshaw, is a popular destination for boating, sailing, and fishing, among other things.

American River Campground Kangaroo Island

Views of fishing vessels dotting the American River may be had from the property. It’s quite a lovely place to sit and take in the scenery.

There are no numbered camping spots, however the campground can fit up to 15 campers, which would be full. There are five powered sites nearby, all lined up next to one other and within easy walking distance of the restrooms. Your van could readily fit because there was no overhanging vegetation.

There is a new, extremely clean, and contemporary BBQ facility with cover and outdoor settings, as well as a shaded playground and a water tank in the back from which you can access rainwater.

At the American River Post Office, you’ll find some basic goods and a variety of restaurants. Head to Kingscote or Penneshaw for petrol and large groceries.

Browns Beach Campground

Around 15-minutes from Penneshaw, the camping ground is situated adjacent Browns Beach, a secluded area adjoining the Hog Bay Road. Visitors can stay a few hours or camp amongst native vegetation for a few days depending on your needs.

Views of the Southern Ocean’s gorgeous bay may be seen from this pet-friendly campground. While the American River camp ground nearby are more popular than this place because of its location, it is still worth the trip just for the peace and quiet.

There are no powered sites at Brown Beach camp ground, however, it does allow for caravan access and it also features toilets and showers. Barbecue facilities are available, as well as a shaded spot for picnicking in the afternoon sun. There is a water source on site, as well as pretty decent internet connection, so you can stay still in contact with world.

Duck Lagoon Campground

Duck Lagoon offers picnic areas, bird watching (including from a bird hide and observation platform), quiet walks along the banks of the lagoon and interpretation of the history of the area.

Emu Bay Campground

Campers at Emu Bay Campground may enjoy picnic spaces, bird viewing from a hide or platform, white, sandy beaches, peaceful walks along the lagoon’s shores, and historical information.

The campsite only has unpowered spaces and although there are no toilets located at the camping ground itself, BBQ facilities, a playground, toilets and sheltered picnic area are available nearby.

Stokes Bay Campground

The camping ground is located on the north coast of Kangaroo Island, about 38 km west of Kingscote, and is one of the largest council campgrounds on Kangaroo island.

It has over 25 spaces for caravans and campers. There is no shower or powered sites at this campground. Although not at the camping ground, BBQ facilities are available off the day carparking area.

There is a kid-friendly rocky pool waiting for you at the end of the rock tunnel, which you may walk through to get to the bay.

The Rock Pool café, open from October to May, is right next door to the camping area.

Vivonne Bay Campground

Vivonne Bay’s long, curving sandy beach is just a short walk from the campground. Vivonne Bay is a great place to go fishing, swimming, beachcombing, and surfing. On the main road, there is a general shop.

Vivonne Bay campsite features a significant number of unpowered sites, but it also includes 8 powered sites for caravans. On-site restrooms, including showers, are available.

There is also a water supply, a playground, and a protected picnic spot.

Western River Campground

Western River has the best of both worlds, a lovelly river running into a secluded white sand beach. The beach is typical of the beaches along the North Coast of Kangaroo Island and is accessible from the camping ground by walking across the bridge.

In addition to the tranquillity of an inland campground with a river running through the middle, the beach is only a short walk away from this charming, quiet camping area.

In addition, there are no powered sites or showers at this campground. A bridge connects the campers to the beach, which is only a short walk away. The campgrounds also provide restrooms, barbecues, and picnic areas.
